Very close to Heraklion, you can find organized beaches, certified by a blue flag. Even if you do not have a car, the beaches can be accessed by bus, with the furthest one being 40 minutes away. Arina, Ammoudara and Amnissos are the most significant beaches.

Arhanes is a picturesque town, built at an altitude of 380 m. Is only 7 klms from the Palace of Knossos. The Aquarium of Crete is one of Europe's largest and most modern aquariums. It has emerged as one of the largest European aquariums, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the marine world of the Mediterranean. It is located in the northwest. part of the former American Base of Gournes where, together with the building complexes of the research institutes of HCMR in Crete, constitutes the SEALSOSCOSMO, the largest marine science center and the Mediterranean marine community in the Mediterranean.
